Vermont Hiking Trails

Appalachian Trail from Route 12 to Lookout Farm Road (5.4 miles)

A lone birch tree with a view Part of a 25 mile section of the AT that is easily accessible in the Woodstock area (see AT info), this section goes from Route 12 to Lookout Farm Road. The 2011 flooding from Hurricane Irene took out the footbridge over Gulf Stream. Remants of this bridge can be seen just downstream a bit unceremoniously strewn on the river bank.

The Hike: Start by fording Gulf Stream. The trail continues with a moderate 4.5 mile climb (see map). After 1.2 miles, you reach a bald hilltop with panoramic views. A .2 mile spur trail at 3.8 miles leads to Wintturi Shelter. There is a privy, and a nearby fresh water spring here. At 4.5 miles, you reach Don's Rock with southwestern views of Killington and Pico peaks. The trail dips just before crossing the old Lookout Farm Road at 5.4 miles.

Getting There: There is limited parking at a small lot on Route 12 that is located 4.4 miles north of Woodstock. Click "View on Google Maps" for a bigger map and driving directions. From that point, the trailhead is 1,450 feet further north on Route 12.
